my mate is emigrating to canada in august and he wants to take his car with him. some department has told him that because it is modified he has to prove it was modified more than 15 yrs ago. he will find this difficult to prove. is anyone familier with importing cars such as this in to canada that can help.

i`d really like to help him. the reasons are below.

he`s owned this car since he first started driving back at 17 yrs of age. its a mk2 ford escort 1981 which he has rebuilt many times and used for motorsport. the last rebuild he photographed extensivley and shows his dedication to the car along with his extreamley high levels of skills. to most people the car was way beyond repair. the end result is inspirational. he doesnt want to sell the car and the market for this car in the uk atm is poor. in addition to this he`s one of the really good guys. his only down fall is was not getting in to VW`s at 17. lol.

sorry this is a bit off topic but i really want to help him if i can and he does not use internatial forums so doesn`t have other avenues.

thanks in advance lee.

http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/roadsafety/safevehicles-importation-other-than-index-446.htm

I have looked into this.

Pertinent part "may be eligible for importation into Canada provided the vehicle has not been altered and the certification from the original manufacturer is maintained, which may be subject to verification at the time of importation. "

I called Transport Canada a while back with regards to importing a T4 from Germany.

They are very strict and will not allow exceptions.

It will have to be inspected here and it seems like he could not just risk the mods not being found if it has been heavily modified.

I think the only way to be sure is to call them directly:

Outside of Canada (long distance charges will apply):
1-204-983-3500 or 1-506-636-5064

or write:

Canada Border Services Agency
Admissibility Branch
Killeany Building, 5th Floor
150 Isabella Street
Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0L8
CANADA

Good luck

Could he "restore" it back to original (unmodified) condition, import it and then put all the modded parts back on once he has gone through all the mandatory red tape ?

Lots of mucking around, but it may achieve the desired result.

If he dosn't want to register and drive it on the road there is probably some kind of exemption for "off road competiion" vehicles eg F1 cars etc.

work of art option sounds good!! Smile Get it in as a "thing", just a possession, and then approach the subject from within, if indeed he wants to make it road legal over there?

The US seems to be just as difficult a place to import vehicles to and there are also rules between the Canadian/States border.

Not that simple I am afraid.
