This is my first LT - it's a 4ton horsebox - downrated to 3.5t. The brakes passed the MOT in January, but I think they're really crap! I'm not sure if they're meant to be like this.
They don't stop me very quickly, even on a slight hill - i'm going down hills very slowly in low gears because of this, and I have to press them pretty hard - I think the vacuum pump's ok, but just wondering what other people's experiences are with the brakes on old LT vehicles? The brakes aren't the best on LT's but I cant state enough how shocking the rears can be if not set up and maintained correctly......
My LT45 coach built will pretty much stand on it's nose if I hit them hard enough.....but that's proper stood on the pedal......

Many thanks.
I think I may have found the problem. There seems to be air escaping from the master cylinder which I've discovered is missing the main seal where it attaches, I assume there is supposed to be a seal there - am I right in thinking that hearing air hissing out from it is NOT normal?

Hi - many thanks all - yes it is missing a gasket - now I'm trying to find a gasket for it and so far the only thing i've found that definitely fits the LT40 is a complete master cylinder gasket kit costing £50 on fleabay - does anyone know where I can get this cheaper? £50 seems excessive seeing as I only need one rubber ring!

If your sure it's just a rubber ring you can find similar sizes like 40x2.5 or 41x3 on fleabay, maybe even the correct size... or try your local motor factors... you could ring around

Thanks all - yes i found the single gasket I'm looking for for ten quid posted so, all good. Do I have to do anything in particular with it or simply place it where it is supposed to sit and put everything back together??

I would think it should be ok to put straight on. Do you know what kind or rubber it is? Some folks recommend a little grease on rubber o-rings to help 'em seal BUT grease may effect the rubber negatively causing swelling and degradation. There are now special rubber greases you can buy to restore rubber or at least not damage them too much if greasing is a necessity. Probably they'd be great for the rubber boots like on the brake pressure regulator, at least that's what I was considering using as the regulator's pin tends to get stiff and needs a bit of grease to keep it free.
BTW 10quid for a f'in O-ring? Where did you find it? Is it OEM or just a size match? O-rings are a pain if you need one and can't find. Also they're not a very popular part to stock anymore as there's no money in 'em... or so I've been told. Edited by Monster LT - 29 May 18 at 01:51 |

Yes I still thought £10 was too much - it's a standard VW part no - used in quite a few vehicles. Got it from Heritage Parts Centre, it doesn't say it's OEM.
