We want a combination of VW camper for "roughing it" in those out of the way places, plus a large-ish caravan for when we want a bit more of the home comforts. Two vehicles is not an option so the VW will have to also be the towing vehicle.

What's gonna be the best van base spec to look for? Budget for the van will be around £10,000, but we're also a couple of years away from making this happen.
No matter where you go, there you are.....

Wow £10k I would say go T4 2.5TDi or with that much a T5. I tow with my T4 and the caravan is an old 80`s metal chassis jobbie and my 2.5 dose`nt struggle dragging it along.

Transits seem pretty popular for towing caravans, especially knackered looking white ones Wink

T4 Multivan.  Actually the T3 tows pretty well too. I trailered a panel van home behind my Westy. Solid as a rock.  A t4 Multivan 2.5tdi would give you great flexibility. Hence why I am planning to buy one! Anyone want a passat Sport estate?Wink

Thats what we wanted, the T4 has a multivan bed so we can use it for a weekend and the caravan is there for when we want a longer break and a proper kitchen

Yeah the late Multivans are lush. Still big money though. I've got my sights set on a 2000 onwards with the late dash etc. Generation, or Atlantis look nice.
