    Posted: 04 Aug 12 at 23:14
I wonder if anyone can shed some light on a small problem I have.  My AGG engine is in the van, all piped and wired ready to go.  It starts first turn of the key and fires for about 2 seconds before dying.  Under closer investigation the spark dissapears.  What could be causing this to happen?

The obvious culprit would be the ecu I presume.  If it is getting a strange signal from one of the sensors would that cause it to kill the engine?

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions of ways forward I would be very grateful.

I have spotted some corrosion on the crank position sensor wires, and we have followed the wiring diagrams from GaryD which have been a great help.   I will go through it all again but I fear I need more inspiration.

Thanks, Oliver.
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.

Definately start with the immobiliser.

T3panel had similar due to one of the circuits dropping whilst cranking, but check the immobiliser first - if you have vcds (buy a usb obd lead off ebay and download the software from Ross tech) you can plug in to a pc and check - it will say 'ignition blocked by imobiliser' or something like that.

Happy cranking!

+1 for the immobiliser - Have you got it wired up?

The key doesn't seem to work if you just tape it inside the ignition barrel pickup, it has to be sort of next to it.

position that always works (credit to syncroandy for this!!!)

hold ignition ring so that the wire to immo box is at 12 oclock position

insert key into ring so it is orientated between 3 and 9 oclock

tilt the head of the key to the 6 oclock position

the bottom silver pointy end of key should now be touching the wire that is in the 12 oclock position

tape it in place!

useful link to check wiring on it

replied on your 80-90 post aswell, have had same symptoms/problem with another AGG that was a fucked crank position sensor - hidden behind oil filter but was fucked.

as has been said, VCDS or if not, use above link to put an obd in.

That brings back bad memories

Mine wouldn't start at all, as I had used the wrong feed wires from the fuse box for the ignition live (it was live with ignition on, but cut the power when cranking)
This one sounds like the immobiliser which also went pear shaped for me. As per everyone else's suggestion, get it connected up to VCDS and read the fault codes - however before you go rushing out to buy another ECU, check everything first, work your way through the wiring and make sure everything is where it should be.

Not to bad, but another ECU with key and imobiliser can be found for 20 quid.
