Hi

Yesterday, I Took out my VW Westy after a winter storage but have driven it every 6 weeks.

Yesterday, after 5/6 miles, I heard a metal scraping sound from my rear wheel.
Jacked up the rear right wheel, spun the wheel and no sound.
Removed the wheel and spun the hub. No sound.
Removed the brake drum but could not see anything loose.
No evidence of any scraping marks anywhere.
Put back the wheel and drove the car a few yards but still the scraping sound is there.
When I go around the corner on the left wheel, no sound. But then when I drive on the straight, the sound is there.
Exhaust box is nice and tight.

My wife drove it a few yards and I walked. The noise is coming somewhere from the rear right wheel area.

Last year, all 4 shocks + wheel bearings were replaced.

Anyone any ideas?

Many thanks

might be a cheap wheel bearing? are they smooth to turn and if they spin freely does it stop in the same place every time?

Hi

There doesn't seem any play on the hub when I hold the drum. It seems to spin freely. Haven't removed the drum or hub to inspect the bearing..

I know you said you had had the drums off-but did you notice wether the brake shoe pins and springs were in place (the small round springs)?-on my last van the pins had corroded away allowing the springs and washers to rotate around the drum occasionally catching and making the same sort of noise you are reporting.

There wasnt much left of the springs/disc but may be worth a further check.

Wheel bearing has a problem, and needs doing again.

Won't misbehave when jacked, only under suspension load and driving pressure.

Poor quality bearings can crack in no time at all. Better quality ones should have some warranty recourse.
