Hi all,
Looking for some assistance.. I have had my van 2 years and about to replace my alternator for the 3rd time... Before I go and put a warranty claim in - is there something else I should be checking that could be causing my problem? I have a split charge system and this all seems to be working OK. My van is a 2000 1.9TD. Any assistance that anyone can give will be appreciated before I go crazy. Thanks in advance Dan

What has gone wrong with the previous two (as in what sort of fault/s did they develop) ?

Hi,
all 3 have stopped charging the battery, the first one seemed to be the bushes inside the alternator and was possible down to general wear and tear, the replacement alternator which was the second alternator seemed to be a similar issue and a replacement was purchased in October. This replacement has now stopped charging the battery also - no obvious symptoms as to what is causing the problem. All connections have been checked to the alternator and the battery with no obvious signs of wear / damage. all belts are in good condition (all replaced 3 weeks ago with cambelt). Any suggestions as to what is causing this would be great :) Thanks Dan

Hmmm, having 3 alternators go south in quick succession sounds like something is wrong elsewhere (unless you are fitting some really bodgy re-conditioned alternators which don't last).
Have you put a multimeter on the battery when the engine is running to see what voltage the battery is getting ? If the battery is on the way out it might not retain a charge which can look a bit like the alternator is not charging properly. Does your engine have a separate voltage regulator or a one that is built-in to the alternator ? If it has a separate one I'd be looking at that fairly carefully. At this stage I think your best bet is to go to a GOOD auto electrician and let them find out what is causing your problems. Obviously whoever has been doing the work up to now is unable to find and fix your problem properly. |
