Hmmm, "Mileage: 438,705 km" seems like a fair innings.

Those readings do seem to point towards an injector problem.  Are you getting any diesel in the engine oil (the seals on injectors have been known to leak, and sometimes a new head is need to fix the problem).

What's the usage and maintenance history, in particular oil change frequency and what actual oils were used ?

always use genuine oil from TPS serviced every 8k, engine had a rebuild at 160k now currently on 272k, no Fuel in the oil from what I can see, the tapping noise must be a broken injector. It still drives and doesn’t seem down on power just a slight misfire when under load. I’m not driving it at the minute but I did get it home when the tapping started, somethings let go as it only happened when I accelerated to overtake.

Could also be a cam lobe problem, IIRC the cams drive the PD injectors.

looks like injector 2 is over fuelling, could be stuck open , the cam is what creates the injector pressure and it’s fired electronically, replace the injector loom too, not overly expensive from Vw , check the cam lobe heights , if they are within spec they are fine, if not replace
