Posted some stuff a
year or so back (re rear door mounted spare wheel carrier) and people seemed
interested in Big Red and how it was coming along. After a lengthy period
of inactivity forum-wise, here's an update:
Seat trim been carried out by TrimShop
in Reditch to my design Power steering fitted (parts found on a scrapyard and fitted by the legend that is Bob the Bus, owner of Volkshaus near Kennilworth). Windows, Roof lites and awning fitted by the guys at Spektrum Interiors in Bromsgrove (top dudes) 60 litre custom water tank manufactured by Henderson Plastics in Norfolk. Fridge and single ring on the inside - Exterior connection for gas BBQ/portable camping stove (most of the gastronomy takes place under the awning!)
Pretty much everything that is planned
has been constructed (a couple of eye-level cupboards still to be completed)
but now need finishing (paint) - but everything works and is fully useable.
It was always the plan to wrap the lower third of the bus with a silver-grey carbon-fibre look - views anyone? - (the seats have a 'CarbonRouge' logo embroidered into them - thought it would be a cool name for the bus, but for now it gets referred to as Big Red). But all in all I'm well pleased
with everything and love it! |

Yeah, this was the first question I was asked when posted some pics on here last time... Answer went as follows:
Getting alloys for LTs is not easy. To begin with, no-one seems to know what the PCD details are (it's 5 x 160 by the way and just about the only other van that has that set-up is a Transit). Anyway, ProjeX in Clevedon, Somerset provided the answers and these beautiful rims (http://wheelsworldwide.co.uk/wheels/commercial_van). They actually manufacture them in Italy. These are their 'Storm' rims which are also available in Black. They are 18 inch rims (8J I think) with 235 55 18 tyres. The rolling diameter is about 5% greater than the 205 80 14 standard set up and only just fit under the arches at the front. You could go for 50 profile tyres which would keep the rolling radius exactly the same as standard, but the problem is getting tyres with a high enough load index. Also I think the 55s look better! Stewart is the main man at ProjeX - he knows all there is to know about wheels and load rating etc. and was very helpful (and patient). PS a set of 4 wheels and tyres will set you back a whisker over a grand..... (sharp intake of breath) Now get your coat (and try to sell it!) |

Sharp intake of breath duly taken.
Some pennies there, but at least they were tasteful pennies. Plenty more been spent on things which were not, in my opinion, worthwhile. Proper nice van. It would have been nice to see the transition from duckling to swan. At 34.000 miles you are heading for the lower end of the table TimAldiss has started.

It's actually done 36,000 miles now, but still it's hard to imagine how a vehicle like that has only done 1500 miles a year on average - especially as it was an absolutely original panel van when I bought it two years ago.
Can't compete with the guy that has a 91 LT31 with just 13,500 miles though - that's just amazing! Are there ever any gatherings of LT owners that you know of? We ought to plan an amazing road trip or something - A mate and I drove to the Sahara Desert and back in 2008 - he was in a 1966 splittie, but it was before I joined the V Dub set (I was in a diesel Toyota Hiace.... shhhhh!). An expensive jaunt (4,500 miles worth of fuel) but one of the best experiences ever!

OMG! I'm in love! Instantly pinned to my new board: http://www.pinterest.com/timaldiss/vw-lt-mk1-gallery/
Dare I ask what you paid for the respray? She's a real beauty, and like Chris says, a gem at that mileage. I'm loving the wheels too as she almost looks lowered. Not sure the missus would go for the wheels, but that red is gorgeous. Is that an original LT red? Good job sir!

Some ones I have not seen before on there Tim. Added to favourites. I will PM my collection, you may want to add some of them too. I saw some of the FIFA World Cup film for 1990 and am sure I saw an Italian LT ambulance in the background. Edit: Just checked YouTube, it is a Fiat, probably.

Nice one. I was surprised at how many 4x4's I decided to pin... love the rugged expedition look... maybe that's my next purchase, although I have to say I don't think I've ever seen one for sale...

Thanks for you interest Tim, and for adding me to your gallery. Mmm, I like the 4 x 4 look too... I have an A8 4.2 TDi Sport Quattro as my daily driver - perhaps I should just combine the two (wheelbase is not all that dissimilar) - now that would be a REALLY interesting van!!
The LT was in pretty good nick when I bought it (it had reposed in a dry barn most of its life doing next to nothing) - there was no rust at all to speak of - apart from some minor damage to the offside where the previous owner had managed to catch a gatepost. There were one or two stone chips too so I decided to get the repair done and then give the whole thing a new coat of paint - keeping the original VW red colour. I paid £600 for the respray - no, I couldn't believe it either! It took 8 litres of paint apparently. It's not a top of the line job - done by a commercial vehicle specialist in Kidderminster. It's a bit orange-peely in places (if you're being picky), and there was no oven-baking involved - but heck, it's just fine as far as I'm concerned. I'd like to lower the back by about 3 inches one day to get the thing riding more level, but there's other stuff to do first (as time and funds allow)... Not that I'd ever sell it, but I do wonder what I might be able to ask for it if I did - there can't be many left on the road in better nick...

I reckon you're right there Karak. I think she's beautiful. I've even referred some of the good folk over on the VW LT Owners (VOLT) Farcebook group who were interested in alloys and/or lowering.
So when do we get to see her? Tewksbury you say... Let's pick somewhere half way between Brighton and Tewksbury and have our first brick-yard LT meet! What do you say? There's quite a few up for it. As long as we don't come too far south or west we should get some Northern stragglers. I'll start a new thread on it. Thinking late summer... mid-September maybe... |

I'd definitely be up for it... except at the beginning of August a machete-waving surgeon name of Mr Bell has decided that he will hack my leg in half in two places (if that doesn't sound too Irish), wrench out my God-given knee and insert one made of plutonium (or is it titanium... I know it's either an 'aniom' or an 'oniom' of some kind) because he says my current one won't pass another MOT. This will make it close to impossible for me to drive Big Red for at least six weeks - which takes us to the middle/end of September. As I am currently co-pilotless (ahhhhh), this could curtail my availability for such an adventure. Of course I could ask you all to trawl your personal databases to find me a suitably decorative live-in chauffeuse for the weekend (I don't think this is that kind of forum is it?), or we might have to consider delaying the proposed knees-up (or knee-op) to facilitate my attendance (- not that it's all about me). Let's see what response we get to the idea, but I'm more than up for it in principle - sounds like a great idea!

Great to see such good quality work and attention to detail spent on a MK1 LT it is a credit to you. Love the windows and colour .
It would be good to see some internal pics! I would be up for an LT meet sometime but in the meantime will be taking up space in the brick-yard camping field at Busfest. Keep up the good work!! |

I would also be up for a meet. Especially as the new and improved interior and shower room should be completed some time in September and me and the other 'alf will be desperate to show it off! I have some 'thank you's to say to all those that have given freely of excellent technical advice over the last few years too. The socials of another single marque club I attend have always been brilliant fun and I can highly recommend the extra dimension it brings to forum membership.
