I have just had to have the head replaced on my CS after auxiliary belt went into the timing belt and threw that out.  I did about 500-600 miles then went back to garage for head tightening to find that the edge of the new timing belt is fraying.  Over time it appears it is running up against one of the pulley flanges and is wearing away.  Garage have held their hands up and said 'we can't see why and you need a specialist to look at it', so now I've basically got a non-runner.  I guess one of the pulleys is out of line?  Maybe a shaft was bent when the timing went?  Anyone else had this happen?  Very grateful as always for any suggestions. Big smile

Just a guess but maybe the stud holding the tensioner pulley was bent, causing it to try to throw the belt off.
Pretty sure I've read somewhere about the seeds actually breaking off completely sometimes.

I think we had something similar crop up with 1.6 TD JX, not long after a new belt had been installed by a not-so-great garage. If I recall correctly, the most likely cause that could be determined was that the the tensioning roller had been rotated the wrong way when tightening the timing belt.

Great thanks both - I was thinking and hoping that the tensioner pulley might be the most likely cause.  I suppose it's less likely to be the crankshaft or camshaft, but if the tensioner is slightly off true, it would certainly throw the belt off line.
I'll focus on that and see if I can get another garage to diagnose fully.

If it's tensioned too tight that will cause it to run out of line,a guide for belt tension is,between cam and injector pump, hold the belt between them and forefinger you should be able to turn it through 90 degrees, I do mine this way and never had any problems had VW diesels since 1982,info from Haynes diesel golf mk1 1500 cc

Yes, I ought to check that.  The garage that has done all the work on the van over the last 5 years are a good reliable and honest bunch of guys, but I think it might be time to get a fresh pair of eyes on it.  I would have thought that if one of the pulleys was running eccentrically it would be fairly obvious, but they've got to the end of the line with it.  If it turns out to be expensive to fix, might have to cut my losses and sell the van as a project...

If only the head was done then the pump should be in the same position .tif the old belt was ok then the pump should be in the correct position
