Hi - am currently shopping for a T3 Westy and have seen one that looks
pretty good, but has the woefully underpowered normally aspirated 1.6 diesel. I'm completely clueless mechanic-wise, so was wondering how much of a pain it would be to convert this to a 1.9 AAZ TD? I'm assuming I would need a different gearbox (from a 1.6 TD? or would the gearbox out of a 1.9 DG be okay?)? Would I need any other extra parts? Also, how much is this likely to cost me (including professional fitting), assuming (good) second hand parts are used? Thanks |

Hmmm, so would need a new exhaust too, starting to look expensive... |

Thought might still be do-able if I can get the van quite cheap... The AAZ Steve's got sounds good. |

I have an AAZ 1.9 TD in my Syncro DOKA Doesn't seem very fast to me can't understand why any one would bother. Seems alot of work for 5hp and abit of torque. Any diesel fans let me know how I can get more performance My 2.1 DJ is not fast enough never mind the diesel. Many years ago I had a 1.6 Diesel use to pull a trailer with a race car on to the Pod. Now that was slow I think my expectations are more these days. |

Depends - firstly if its to upgrade a normally aspirated diesel (which was my original query), its a 25 hp upgrade (from 50 hp), secondly, if I did have a 1.6 TD but it was worn out and needed replacing, why not replace it with something a little more powerful?? Doesn't look that much more work than replacing it with another JX, though not having actually tried this, I confess I could be talking cobblers here... If I had a decent JX engined T3 I wouldn't bother upgrading to an AAZ, unless it was worn- out, though.
Really? I've driven a 2.1 T3 and it felt pretty nippy to me for a camper (and I think it was a cat-restriced SS), mind you I'm used to a 1.4 VW Polo usually, so my expections probably aren't that high!
