VIN System.

In 1980 VW changed their chassis numbering system to fall into line with other vehicle manufacturers and adopted the standardised ISO 17 digit chassis number system.

Contained within this number is the manufacturer, country of origin, the factory where it was made, model year and the individual serial number.

The chassis number can be found in a few places, on your vehicle log book (V5), inside of the front page of your service book, on the white paper sticker above the pedals in the cab of the van, on the plate on the O/S front door shut and where it is stamped onto the chassis outrigger on the right hand side of the van.

If you follow the simple guide below it will help you extract the information you require.

W country of origin, in this case West Germany.

This system works for most vans, some early ones don't follow this system, instead you will get something like this.

In this case you would take the only letter in there (A) and this will give you the model year.
