| VW's Parts numbering System. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Whoa, scary numbers! not really, clever bunch this lot of Germans, there is a fairly easy easy way to decipher what they all mean, dead handy for all those bits you bought at a swap meet and have no idea what they are! The part numbers are 9 digits long, sometimes 10 but we will get to that bit later. So, 9 digits, 3 blocks of 3 251 807 123 A So, the first batch of three give you the vehicle the part was originally designed for, in this case 251, which we all know (don't we?) is a left hand drive VW T3 panel van. <click here> for T3 type numbers. The second batch give you the area of the vehicle the part was fitted. The first digit of the second batch gives you the main group, i.e. 8, Body, then the next two give you the sub group, 07 in this case is bumpers. List of Main Groups
Note, theres too many variations of the sub groups to list, so I've not done so, sorry! The last 3 digits are the actual part number bit, these are random numbers, so 123 is a bumper end cap. The last digit, the 9th digit determinds if the part is fitted to the left or right of the vehicle (where applicable), a odd digit says that it is fitted to the left of the vehicle. In our example the last digit is odd so that would make our bumper end cap for the left of the vehicle. * yes, I know that a left front bumper end cap is also the same as a rear right one before I get a tirade of e-mails! * The letter at the end is for alternatives or modifications, so, if the part has been modified due to poor design then it will keep the same part number but will gain a letter to the end. |
