Locating Codes.
 

On the inside page of your service book you should have one of these stickers (pictured below), on this
sticker is a load of quite useful information,things like engine,colour and gearbox codes.

The sticker can also be found on the inside of your van in the cab (if it hasn't been removed!) just above
the pedals on the drivers side (O/S) on the metal heater ducting.

If you move your mouse over the different numbers you should get a brief description of what each one
means ,an by the wonder of new fangled technology you can click on the different parts and get

transported (transported...get it!? it gets much worse I assure you!) to a separate page with much more

detailed information.

Service Book Sticker
Engine code.
This can be tallied against a chart to give the exact engine fitted to the vehicle.
Chassis Number Full VW Type Number Engine Code Paint code. Gearbox Code Equipment and Optional Extras Dealer Stamp. Trim Codes, Sadly no info for you.
Selling dealers stamp.
Including, name address telephone number and the unique dealer code.
VW Type number.
All VW's have a type number, this is used to identify the model of vehicle and this number is also used in VW's parts numbering system.

Chassis number.
Using the standardised 17 digit ISO system the chassis number can be deciphered to give type number, model year, factory where the vehicle was built and the vehicles serial number.

Gearbox code.
This can be tallied against a chart to give the exact identification of what gearbox is fitted to the vehicle.
Paint code.
Paint codes varied from year to year, this gives you the exact code needed for ordering touch up etc.
Optional extras.
These digits give you all the additional item that were fitted to the vehicle at the factory, some came as part of 'packs' of several items (E.g. winter pack)
Trim code.
These digits give you the level of trim given to the vehicle, sadly no information available it this time.

The VIN (chassis number) can also be found stamped into this chassis out rigger, this is the actual chassis number.

Engine numbers.
The engine number is stamped on the engine block.
Diesels - Between and below injector numbers 3 and 4.
2.0l air-cooled - By the breather box on the case.
WBX - on top of the engine near the distributor.

Gearbox code.
The gearbox code can be found stamped into the gearbox before the manufacture date near the drive flange.

Paint codes.
Found under the left hand front seat on a silver sticker.
