A/C Air Cooled Engine is cooled by air, moved by a large fan rather than a conventional radiator with coolant
A/C Air Conditioning Available as an optionon some models.
Advance. Brand name of a minibus converter.(UK)
Adventurewagen. Brand name of a motorhome converter. (US)
AFM . Air Flow Meter. Part of fuel injection system, measures amount of air entering engine and sends signal to ECU to adjust fuelling to suit.
Air-cooled.   Engine cooling system forcing air over it to cool it, crude, noisey.
ABDC After Bottom Dead Centre. The period where the piston is travelling up the bore on the compression stroke.
ATDC. After Top Dead Centre. The period where the piston is travelling down the bore on the power stroke, on number 1 cylinder.
Autohomes.   Brand name of a motorhome converter.(UK)
Autosleeper.   Brand name of a motorhome converter.(UK)

Bay window  
Rust bucket VW Transporters produced between 1967 to 1979.
Bilbo.   Brand name of a motorhome converter.(FR?)
Blue coil. Ignition coil. Ignition coil suited to 009 distributor, CB points only. Higher voltage.
Bluestar.   Late special edition T3 loaded with toys in metalic blue.
Bosch.   OEM for some VW parts, generally electrical and fuel parts.
Boxer engine.   A term for describing a horizontaly opposed engine (2,4,6 Cylinder)
Bra.   Protective vinyl cover for front of vehicle to prevent stone chips.
Brick.   Affectionate nick name for a VW T3.
BRM's.   Crap wheels, normally fitted to beetles.
BBDC. Before Bottom Dead Centre. Engine position where the piston is before it reaches its lowest point
BTDC. Before Top Dead Centre. The period where the piston is travelling up the bore on the compression stroke of number 1 cylinder.
Bulli.   Affectionate nickname for all VWType2's.(German)
Bus.   VW's name for their minibus up to'83.

Carat.   High spec T3, top of the range if you like.
Caravelle.   VW's name for their minibus from '83 on.
CB. Citizen Band. Dodgey old 2 way radios from the '80's
CB (2) . Contact Breaker. Contact breaker points, or points, the part that switches your ignition coil on and off, fitted in the distributor on older vehicles
CNG. Compressed natural gas.  
Country Homes.   Brand name of a motorhome converter.(US)
Crewcab.   Name for a pick up truck with a second row of seats behind the driver.
Cut and Cav. Cav = Cavalier (Vauxhall) A budget method of lowering a T3 with cut springs and Cav to rear.
CV Joint. Constant Velocity. Flexible joints fitted to either end of a driveshaft.
D
Danbury.   Brand name of a motorhome converter.(UK)
Delorto. Carburettors. manufacturer of carburettors, mainly performance.( I )
Devon.   Brand name of a motorhome converter.(UK)
Digifant.   Bosch electronic fuel injection.
Digijet.   Bosch electronic fuel injection.
Diff lock. Differential lock. A system where the differential can be locked for better traction on slippery surfaces by means of a dash mounted switch.
DIS. Digital Idle stabilisation. A electronic system used to steady the idle speed of a petrol engine.
Doka. Double Kabine(German) What the Europeans call a crew cab. ( D )
DTI. Dial Test Indicator. Instrument that takes linear measurements, used for setting diesel injection pump timing, checking for TDC etc. Very acurate .
E
ECU. Electronic Control Unit. A computer that controls the fueling, ABS etc. where applicable.
EMPI. European Motor Parts Inc. VW aftermarket parts producer.
Eurovan.   US name for the T4.
F
Floating caliper.   The later "Girling" brake caliper fitted to vans '85 on. So called as it is mounted on 2 sliders and floats.
G
G11. Antifreeze. VW brand antifreeze - blue.
G12. Antifreeze. VW brand antifreeze - pink (phosphorous free).
G12+. Antifreeze. VW brand antifreeze - Purple (phosphorous free).
Girling   Automotive parts manufacturer, generally brakes and assoc. parts
Gypsy. Karmann Gypsy . Coachbuilt camper conversion, looks like a caravan on a Pick up.(D)
H
H3.   Type of headlamp and bulb.
H4.   Type of headlamp and bulb. H4 is superior, brighter etc.
Hanover. Germany. The factory where T3's were built until 1990.
Hella.   OEM parts, generally lighting equipment.
Henrymag.   French manufacturer of fibreglass hard tops for pickups/doka's.(F)
Holdsworth.   Brand name of a motorhome converter.(UK)
I
ISO. International Standardisation Organisation. Several of their systems are in use on the T3, chassis numbers being 1.
J
Joker. Westfalia. A type of Westfalia camper.(D)
JK. Just Kampers . UK VW Type 2 parts supplier.

Karmann. of Osnabruck. German coachbuilders. (D)
Komet.   Brand name of a motorhome converter.(UK)
L
Liesuredrive.   Brand name of a motorhome converter.(UK)
LHD. Left Hand Drive Steering wheel mounted to the left hand side of the vehicle.
LPG. Liquified Petroleum Gas  
LSD. Limited slip differential. A system whereby the gearbox senses slip to a driven wheel and transfers the power to the oppersite side to stop wheel spin.

Magma.   Late special edition T3 Doka Syncro loaded with toys.
Magnum.   Special edition multivan.
Multivan.   MPV conversion with table, cool box and bed '85 on.
N
Nacht Meaning AFTER. Used on 2.0l aircooled timing scale - German.
NLA. No Longer Available. Discontinued.
NOS. New Old Stock. A brand new out of production genuine part.
N/S. Nearside. Side of vehicle nearest to kerb.(Left in the UK)
N/S/F. Nearside front. Left hand front corner of vehicle.(UK)
N/S/R. Nearside rear. Left hand rear of vehicle.(UK)
O
OHC. Over Head Cam. Type of cylinder head design where the cam shaft acts directly above the valves (rather than OHV with pushrods)
OHV. Over Head Valve. Used to describe and engine layout where inlet and exhaust valves are mounted above the piston as opposed to a side valve engine.
Okrasa.   German tuning specialist, later known as Ottinger.(D)
O/S. Offside The side of the vehicle furthest away from the kerb(Right in UK)
O/S/F. Off Side Front Right hand front corner (UK)
O/S/R. Off Side Rear Right hand rear corner (UK)
Ottinger.   German tuning specialist.(D)
OEM. Original Equipment Manufacturer.

Panel van.   A delivery van with no windows.
Pierburg.   Carburettor and fuel parts manufacturer.
Pop top .   Elevating roof.
Projectzwo. Project2. German tuning parts manufacturer/supplier.(D)
Pull down unit. Part of pierburg carburettor 2E3. Unit that releases some choke when the engine is revved.

RHD. Righ Hand Drive. Steering wheel mounted to the right hand side of the vehicle.
RON. Rated octane number. Numbering system for the quality of petrol.
RPM Revolutions Per Minute. Generally refering to engine speed.

Solex.   Carburettor and fuel parts manufacturer.
Sport 6. Advance. Minibus model made by Advance with 6 seats (UK)
Sport 12. Advance. Minibus model made by Advance with 12 seats (UK)
Steyr-Daimler-Puch.   The manufacturers of the Syncro 4 wheel drive system used on T3's. Based in Graz, Austria.
Syncro.   VW's 4 wheel drive system used on T3's from '85 on.
T
T1. T = Transporter. 1st generation of the VW Transporter - Split screen 1948-1967 .
T2. T = Transporter. 2nd generation of VW Transporter - Bay window 1967-1979.
T3. T = Transporter. 3rd generation of VW Transporter - Wedge/Brick 1979-1990(2).
T4. T = Transporter. 4th generation of VW Transporter - Eurovan 1990-2003.
T5. T = Transporter. 5th generation of VW Transporter 2003 to present.
TD. Turbo Diesel. Conventional indirect injection diesel engine. Uses pre combustion chamber.
TDC. Top Dead Centre. The exact position of the engine when number 1 cylinder is at the very peak of the compression stroke.
TDI. Turbo Direct Injection. A more efficient type of diesel engine, fuel injected direct to cylinder.
Tristar.   Late special edition T3 Doka syncro loaded with toys.
TSZ-H Transistorised-hall effect. A type of electronic ignition system, hall effect.
Type1.   Beetle.
Type1 engine.   A Beetle engine, also used in some T2's.
Type181.   VW trekker, funny 2wd jeep thingy.
Type2.   VW commercials including LT models 1948 to 1992.
Type25.   An inacurate nickname for the VW T3, wedge, brick etc. Sadly (UK).
Type3.   Fastback, Squareback, Notchback.
Type4.   Fugly VW sales disaster.
Type4 engine.   Engine from aforementioned Fugly car used in some other VW's.
TUV.   German standards agency, TUV approved is always good quality.
TZR-h. Transistorised-hall effect. A type of electronic ignition system, hall effect.
U
ULO.   Manufacturer of rear lamp units (2 types, Hella and ULO).
V
VAG. Volkswagen AG.  
Vanagon.   Official US name for the T3.
Viking.   Brand name of a motorhome converter.(UK)
Viscous coupling.   The expensive bit of a syncro's drive train that decides how much power to transmit to the front wheels.
Vor Meaning BEFORE. Before, used on 2.0l aircooled timing scales - German.
W
WBX. Wasserboxer(German). Or waterboxer in English, meaning water-cooled boxer engine .
WBX6.   6 Cylinder waterboxer engine by Ottinger.
Weber. Carburettors manufacturer of carburettors, mainly performance.( I )
Wedge.   Affectionate nick name for a VW T3
Whitestar.   Late special edition T3 loaded with toys.
Westfalia.   German coachbuilders, producer of VW approved campers.(D)
Westie. Westfalia. German coachbuilders, producer of VW approved campers.(D)
Wolfsburg. Germany.

The town built up around the VW factory in Lower Saxony.

Wolfsburg edition.   Special Editions of vehicles in the VW range.

16". Syncro. Relating to the size of the wheels, 16" syncro's were much stronger.
